Black Musicians to Know in Colorado

The impact of Black culture and expression is a giant force in modern popular music. No story about American music would be complete without honoring the impact of Black musicians in the U.S. In honor of Black History Month, we are celebrating by sharing some local black musicians we admire who are shaping the local music scene around them here in Colorado. There is so much talent in Colorado, which made it hard to narrow down our list, but here are the musicians of color living in Colorado who you should DEFINITELY know.

Such, is a Boston-born, New York-raised, California-educated, Chicago-groomed soul singer living in Denver, CO. Her incredible work with Derrick Hodge and Robert Glasper put her on our radar, but she is a unique and shining talent all on her own. It doesn’t take long to feel the talent and dedication this artist exudes in her performances and compositions. Recently she was featured singing in Robert Glasper’s score for the “Dream in Black” AT&T commercial. The beauty and intensity of her voice, and the emotional depth of her compositions are awe-inspiring, and her presence is undeniable.

Parris Fleming

Parris Fleming is a trumpet player, producer, composer, and horn arranger living in Denver, CO.

His experience working with local favorites-The Motet– have put him on the local music map but we’re also big fans of his hip-hop band TMRW People. Most recently he has been a part of the Grammy-winning team working with mega popstar Harry Styles

Solomon Chapman

Solomon Chapman is a pianist, composer, band leader, and music educator from Aurora, CO.

He is one of the most prominent names in the local gospel and jazz communities. Watching his band- Same Cloth– perform is mesmerizing and invigorating. His musicality and community efforts make him an exceptional standout, and a valued member of the Colorado music scene. His work with Jude, a young Aurora pianist (recently featured on CBS Colorado) has brought attention to his amazing contributions to the community.

Derrick Hodge

Derrick Hodge might just be the best bassist in CO, on top of being an amazing composer. His accomplishments include Grammy-winning work with Robert Glasper, which make him a standout in the Colorado music scene. Best known for his work as a sideman, his original compositions are profoundly inspiring including his work as a composer for the Peacock original film “The Best man”. He has also received extensive acclaim for his work as an arranger with the Atlanta Symphony. He is an amazing talent, and as Coloradans, we’re proud to claim him as one of the best.
